Talk by Stephen Rowley, scientist, engineer, artist and musician

Stephen Rowley has been mumming since the 1970s. During the early C21st he led a project called Mum & Tuk which brought together the mumming traditions of England and Barbados. This project was delivered in nearly 100 schools across Gloucestershire and involved taking back local plays into the communities where they had been collected.
In 2011 he established an International Mummers Festival and the Mummers Symposium to explore its history and practice.
Along the way he became involved in the hobby horses and other beasts associated with mummers plays and other customs. This included reviving The Broad – a bull-like character used for wassailing in southern Gloucestershire.
