Gloucestershire and the Atlantic Slave Trade
When Edward Colstons statue was put into Bristol Docks, and questions were asked in the media I realised how little I knew of slavery links in Gloucester and the county. When the subject was researched it was disconcerting to find how many people known in history were involved one way or the other in the trade and its ancillary business. Gloucester has a record of both supporting and protesting the slave trade, this talk gives a brief national background then tells the county story.
Tony Conder came to Gloucester to open the National Waterways Museum in the docks in 1988. He is now retired and volunteers with Gloucester Civic Trust as a city guide. He is involved with the Heritage Harbour and the celebration of Gloucesters Docks. He also researches and presents talks on the City and the County in history.
