John Chandler is our leader on this visit to Wiltshire. John has written extensively about Salisbury over more than forty years and is still actively researching its history.
We will first pay a brief visit to Old Sarum (the word is a short form of an old name for Salisbury), where a medieval castle and cathedral were built inside an Iron Age hillfort commanding the five river valleys that converge in the area.
Moving on to Salisbury itself we will see the outside of the Cathedral (founded in 1220), now without scaffolding for the first time in 38 years after extensive restoration work costing more than £30m. John will take us into the Cathedral Close, the largest in Britain, with its distinguished houses of many architectural periods and styles, such as Malmesbury House, Mompesson House (NT), Arundells (the former home of Sir Edward Heath), the Bishop’s Palace, which is now the Cathedral School, the Rifles Museum and The King’s House (Salisbury Museum). A cathedral guide will give us a tour of the cathedral, where Magna Carta can be viewed in the Chap-ter House. Following an interval for lunch (options include the Refectory Restaurant and the Bell Tower Tea Rooms attached to the cathedral), John will lead us on a city tour before we return to the coach at 4.00 pm for the journey home.
